Going on Holiday with your dog

Tiny flexible, curious dogs make great traveling companions. Little terriers and small Schnauzers, Poodles, and Pugs make wonderful globe-trotters. Bigger dogs like to protect the house and give you an enormous welcome when you come back. But there are always exceptions in every case due to their personalities.

If you're working with an adult dog who is unused or scared of vehicle travel, you will have to make a regular coaching project out of it. An unsecured pet can distract you while driving or meddle with the operation of the car.

Too many unsecured pets have leaped from a moving car and been fatally wounded, when a carrier or tether might have saved them. Vehicle seats and containment seats are now available and can be secured with your present seat belts, and some kind of restraint is being considered imperative by many states and municipalities round the country.

Before you travel ensure your dog is properly ID Tagged, as many pets can become separated from their owners while traveling. Nearly all kennels, vets, and animal infirmaries have scanners that may read these little implanted chips that are registered into nation-wide data bases with the animals home address and name. The process is cheap, fast, and permanent. You should ensure that your dog has had all his vaccinations recently, and get a current health certificate from your vet. For more information, check out this excellent resource on pet care.

The following is a catalogue of items that should include as a travel kit for your dog : - An additional collar - A strong leash - Wet towelettes - His food - Treats - A sealable container of water - A gnaw toy - All needed drugs and supplements - Brush or brush - An old towel - Plastic bags on the trip your pet will need access to water continually, exercise, and breaks to stretch and relieve himself, and comfy temperatures. Never leave a pet alone in a vehicle particularly in hot weather, when exposed to high temperatures, dogs can have a heat stroke.

Hopefully it won't come to this; but signals of motion illness include whining, barking, pacing, salivation, panting, and barfing. To conquer these conditions, limit their perspective out of windows, stop often, and again, do not let them become overheated. Before you leave home, clip or trim your dog's nails, brush out all loose hair, and feed him lightly, never a big meal. Call ahead and ensure your pet is welcome at your destination, as many hostels and motels don't permit pets. Have a great trip!

Bierhimmel

One of the few places in town where gays, lesbians, heteros, transvestites, tourists and locals socialise together, Bierhimmel (Beer Heaven) on Kreuzberg's bustling Oranien Strasse is quite unique. The bar has just been given a makeover which has seen the main room painted bright yellow and the legendary Backroom stripped of the fun fur and kitsch that has adorned it for more than a decade. Spacey furniture and luminous colours have been installed but there's no change to the music, which still takes in everything from Nightmares on Wax to Barry White.

Marc Cary Quarter

He looks like a cross between Herbie Hancock and a cartoon superhero, but Cary is the real deal: a jazz pianist with chops and highly organised musical visions. He cut his teeth in D.C.'s 1980s go-go scene and eventually graduated from the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, and his sense of groove is evident on albums like 'Rhodes Ahead, Vol. 1', in which he takes the Rhodes Piano into a whole new dimension. With song titles like 'Saturn's Return' and 'Take Me Higher' you can tell Cary's shows will take you trippin'.

Full Moon

San Francisco based Michael Light trawled through 32,000 photographs taken of and on the moon during the years of the Apollo Missions to select the 100 that appear here. Some are as familiar as the footprint in the lunar dust, others have been rarely sighted before but all of them produce a sense of awe. The technical quality of the images is excellent and, considering all of the photographers were by amateurs, the artistic sensibility is exceptionally high.

Stay safe in your Cote d'Azur Hotel

Get a card with the hotel's name and address. Stay in hostels on well-traveled streets in safer areas of the town of your destination. Though, avoid the first floor as it is the best location for thieves. Get yourself acquainted with the situation of stairways, fire escapes routes, emergency exits and alarms. Keep your hotel room door locked at any time.

Never invite strangers into your hotel room. Never leave your property (camera, documents, jewellery, and so on) scattered around where hotel workers can see them. Before leaving you room for the day, put the'Do not disturb' sign on your door to suggest the room is occupied. When you're prepared for the room to be cleaned, call the cleaning staff. Use the hotel safe to store valuables.

If a fire starts take your key before leaving the room, as most hotel doors lock instantly. Turn around and walk up to the roof fire exit. If all exits are blocked or if there's heavy smoke in the corridor, you'll be better off staying in your room.

If there's smoke in your room, open a window and turn on the rest room vent. Hang a bed sheet out the window as a signal. Bail water onto your door or any hot walls. Stuff wet towels into cracks under and around doors where smoke can enter.

When you leave your hotel get a map and become familiar with the town and site of your hotel. With assistance from hotel staff find hazardous areas of the town and avoid visiting them by any means.

Don't stay out on the streets late. When walking, remain on wide, well-lit streets. Watch your drinks being poured. Get recommendation from your hotel employees about credible eateries and other entertainment. Never resist armed theft, it can lead to violence.

I wish you a successful and safe trip!
